Complete Guide to Trekking Mount Rinjani for Beginners

Mount Rinjani (3,726 meters above sea level) is the second highest volcano in Indonesia and the dream of many climbers. Here's a guide for those of you who are first-timers.

Hiking Trail

Two main routes: Sembalun (sloping at the start, suitable for summiting) and Senaru (more lush). Many go up via Sembalun and down via Senaru.

Physical Preparation

Start jogging or going up and down stairs 2-3 weeks before leaving. The climb takes 2-3 days with quite heavy uphill terrain.

Mandatory Equipment

• Mountain jacket & warm sleeping bag

• Trekking shoes (not regular shoes)

• Headlamp for early morning summits

• Minimum 3 liters of water per day

Cost

Use open trip services with certified guides and porters. Includes tent, meals and national park tickets. Don't climb alone.

Summit Tips

The summit attack starts at 02.00 in the morning to catch the sunrise. The trail is sandy and steep — be patient, keep your breathing rhythmic, and bring enough water.

With proper preparation, anyone can climb Rinjani. Good luck!
